One Way to Encourage Users to Use Your App

28 Jun 2010, written by Eric 0 Comments

Web companies are working hard to extend their features to cater to the needs of their users. However, feature-rich web applications can be intimidating and confusing, especially to the first time user. Several websites such as getdropbox.com, linkedin.com & reverbnation.com ease the learning process by providing a systematic tour and an award upon completion.

For some psychological reason, users enjoy the idea of ‘completeness’.

"OMG It's like I'm about to finish a software tutorial!

Progress can be visually represented in various ways such as progress bars & checkmarks.

The Benefits:

  • Users learn the full breadth of your services
  • Customer service questions might answered during exploration
  • Encourage activity with existing users or invite new users
  • Opportunities to show more ads or help users upgrade to premium account

The idea of incremental progress is nothing revolutionary- but it’s simple and satisfying. Here are three sites that use progress bars and reward systems to get new users acquainted.

GetDropBox

GetDropbox.com
This file management system’s ‘Getting Started’ page allows users to explore various features in a non-linear fashion. Also, make note of their creative way of displaying progress: an empty box that fills as you meet objective.

User Reward: Green checkmarks & bonus 250 extra storage. Oh and for every friend that signs up, you ANOTHER 250 MB of space
Company Reward: More users to potentially upgrade to premium account.

Oh and by the way

Doesn't it feel good?

Linkedin.com
This professional networking site helps job-seekers connect with companies and employers find reliable workers with non-sketchy pasts.

User Reward: A more complete profile lends you more credibility as a professional. In fact, LinkedIN claims “Users with complete profiles are 40 times more likely to receive opportunities through LinkedIn”. The final task is to ask a recommendation from a colleague. Nothing like personal endorsement to ‘up’ your value.
Company Reward: It’s a free service for employees, so the more users that sign up the more they can sell sidebar advertisements.

Reverb Nation

Reverbnation.com
On this site, a complete profile benefits the band, who presumably wants to reach more fans. Tasks include uploading mp3s, band photos, filling out biographies

Reward for User: (potentially)Connect with more fans!!
Reward for Company: More people to see banner ads and potentially more premium account upgrades
